Anybody with a mixer and a trailer can call themselves a concrete contractor. The work that separates the ones worth hiring from the ones you'll be calling back in two years happens before the truck ever shows up, and most homeowners never see it. Here's what to ask about and what should make you walk.

Ask about the base before you ask about the finish

A slab is only as good as what's underneath it. Around Bossier City, the ground is mostly Red River floodplain soil, a mix of clay and loam that holds water and swells when it's wet, then shrinks and cracks when it dries out in August. If a contractor pours straight onto that native soil without compacting a proper base, the slab will move with it. You want to hear them talk about excavating down 4 to 6 inches, laying crushed limestone or gravel, and compacting it in layers before any concrete goes down. If someone skips this step to save a day, you'll see it in the cracking within a year or two, not a decade.

Older neighborhoods like Cedar Grove or streets closer to downtown Bossier were built mostly in the 1950s and 60s, often with thinner or nonexistent gravel base by today's standard. Repair or replacement work there sometimes means correcting decades of drainage problems the original pour never accounted for. Newer subdivisions off Airline Drive or out toward Haughton and Benton usually have more consistent base work already in the ground, but that doesn't mean an addition or a new patio there gets a pass on prep.

Get the reinforcement and joint layout in writing

Wire mesh and rebar aren't interchangeable, and a contractor should tell you which one they're using and why. Mesh works fine for a lot of patios and walkways. Driveways and anything that'll carry a vehicle or a heavy load should have rebar, tied and set on chairs so it actually sits in the middle of the slab instead of sinking to the bottom during the pour, where it does nothing.

Control joints matter just as much. Concrete is going to crack somewhere as it cures and shrinks. The question is whether it cracks where the contractor tells it to or wherever it feels like. Joints cut every 8 to 10 feet on a driveway, sawed within 24 hours of the pour, give the slab a place to crack that you'll never notice. Skip that step and you'll get a random crack running diagonally across your driveway within the first year, and no amount of sealant fixes that after the fact.

What a real bid should actually say

A one-page quote with a price and nothing else isn't a bid, it's a guess. Ask for the slab thickness in inches, the PSI rating of the mix (4,000 PSI is standard for residential driveways here, a bit less for patios and walkways), whether it's rebar or mesh, and how many days before you can drive on it. Most flatwork needs about 24 to 48 hours before foot traffic and 5 to 7 days before a vehicle, though full cure strength takes closer to 28 days. If a contractor tells you it's fine to park a truck on it the next morning, that's worth questioning.

The bid should also spell out who's handling the old concrete removal and haul-off if this is a replacement, who's responsible for grading and slope, and what happens if they hit something unexpected once they start digging, an old footing, a septic line, tree roots. In older parts of town especially, nobody knows exactly what's under a driveway until it's opened up.

Local weather changes the schedule more than people think

Summers here run hot and humid, with heat index numbers well past 100 in July and August. Concrete that sets too fast in that heat can crack at the surface before it's cured properly underneath, so a contractor working in summer should be misting the slab or using a curing compound, not just pouring and leaving. Spring brings the heaviest rain, and a downpour in the middle of a pour is a real problem, not a minor inconvenience. A contractor who watches the forecast and reschedules rather than pours into wet weather is doing you a favor, even if it means waiting a few extra days.

Winter isn't the freeze-thaw nightmare it is farther north. We might see a handful of hard freezes a season, not dozens, so that's less of a factor here than proper drainage and grading. What does matter is where the water goes once it leaves your slab. Bossier City lots are often graded to carry water toward the street, and a driveway or patio poured without the right slope, generally a quarter inch per foot away from the house, will pond water against your foundation during a heavy spring rain instead of shedding it.

Permits, insurance, and the offers that should worry you

Most residential flatwork in Bossier City needs a permit, and anything tying into the city right-of-way, like a driveway apron meeting the street, usually needs sign-off from the city before work starts. A contractor who's done this before will handle that paperwork without being asked and will expect an inspection of the base before the pour and sometimes after. If someone tells you permits are unnecessary or a waste of time, that's a sign they're either inexperienced or cutting corners you won't see until later.

Ask whether they carry general liability insurance and, for larger residential jobs, whether they hold a state contractor's license through Louisiana's licensing board. A legitimate contractor won't hesitate to answer either question. Be cautious of a bid that comes in far below everyone else's, a request for full payment upfront, or pressure to sign the same day you get the quote. Get two or three bids, ask each contractor the same questions about base depth, mix strength, and joint spacing, and compare the answers, not just the numbers.
